What is “Hakama”?

The name “hakama” itself refers to a type of kimono that covers the lower body.

However, it is commonly used to refer to the style of wearing a kimono with hakama.

We call both the garments worn by women and those worn by men “Hakama,” but their origins and styles are different.

・For women

Women’s “Hakama” originated from court ladies’ formal attire.

In recent years, female students at universities often wear hakama for graduation ceremonies, which has led to a strong association of hakama with students in Japan.

However, traditionally, hakama is a type of kimono that can be worn by people of all ages.

・For men

Men’s “Hakama” originated from the formal attire of the samurai class.

We also call this style “Haori-hakama”.
